RIVER TRAILS

Pittsburgh offers shared-use trails along all three rivers which offer stunning views of the city. Try walking or biking one of them—and perhaps feeding the ducks. You can find these trails on the Pittsburgh bike map, available here.

CITY STEPS

Up for a challenge? Try walking up the hills of Pittsburgh using the city steps, shown on the map linked above. The Sterling Street stairs, Rising Main stairs, and Planet Street stairs offer a particularly difficult challenge.

THE OVEN PIZZA COMPANY

The Oven has a very unique style of making pizza. Get a red pizza here—and try this Wexford staple.

SAGA HIBACHI

A great hibachi restaurant on the southern edge of Cranberry with talented chefs and quality ingredients.

SUGAR BIRD

This outdoor restaurant and bar, located across the street from the home-plate-side of PNC Park, has brined chicken tenders, cake donuts, and not much else. Great for a quick bite to eat while watching a game on the giant projector—or to take for a picnic in the North Shore park. If you're lucky, you might also come across some free outdoor games here, including cornhole and giant Jenga (with 2x4s).

MAX'S ALLEGHENY TAVERN

This Pittsburgh classic has been around for well over a century, and features delicious German dishes, a player piano, and more free side dishes than you can shake a stick at.

BURGATORY

This burger restaurant and bar, found in the North Shore but also in many other places throughout the city, does excellent custom burgers. For the party-minded, it is also nearby to Tequila Cowboy, one of Pittsburgh most well-known bars.

THE EAGLE

Home to delicious fried chicken, BBQ burnt ends, macaroni and cheese, and other Southern comfort food specialties.

POINT STATE PARK

Pittsburgh's Point is a must see. At the point of confluence where the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers merge and become the Ohio River, you will see great views of the North Shore and South Shore, a fountain (sometimes), and meet many energetic Pittsburghers and visitors.

THE MONONGAHELA INCLINE

One of two furnicular railways left in Pittsburgh, the Monongahela Incline is an iconic Pittsburgh landmark. For the same price as a bus fare, see amazing views of the city as you climb the hill, and then experience the panoramic view from Grandview Avenue at the top. The top of the hill also has some restaurants and bars across Grandview Avenue on Shiloh Street. You can park in the lot across from the Station Square T station at the bottom of the incline, but be sure to pay the meter.

PIPER'S PUB

Home to quite possibly the best fish and chips in Pittsburgh—and also home to many other Scottish favorites. The Pub Chip Shop (a takeout-centered restaurant next door) shares a kitchen with Piper's Pub, and offers the same fish and chips (and also a fish sandwich) for a few dollars less.

PRIMANTI BROS.

This Pittsburgh classic is also available at its original home in the Strip District, in Oakland, and in many other neighborhoods and towns throughout the region.

THE PRETZEL SHOP

A South Side classic, the Pretzel Shop offers "South Side Pretzels" for 80 cents each. This store has been open for nearly a century, and if you go to the back entrance on Carey Way (open until 2PM), you can see the oven—and get hot, fresh pretzels when they come out. This shop is closed on Sundays.

350 BAKERY

A delicious bakery focused mainly on sweet treats. This store is usually open until 2:00 PM on weekends, but has highly irregular hours.

THE COLOR PARK

Feeling artistic? Go to the park where it's legal to do graffiti, and show off your work to the city. This park is located along the South Side Riverfront Park bike/walking trail. Not recommended for young children.

MERCURIO'S PIZZA AND GELATO

A restaurant which has delicious, Neapolitan-style pizza, made with real ingredients, and offered for reasonable prices. Also, the gelato milkshakes are an excellent choice. This restaurant also has another location on Freeport Road in Fox Chapel.

THE MILKSHAKE FACTORY

Good for rich milkshakes with real whipped cream on top. This restaurant also has a few other locations around the city, including one in East Liberty.

SCHENLEY PARK

A diverse city park which offers hiking and biking trails, a golf course, many lawns with great views of the city, the gardens of Phipps Conservatory, a lake, and a forest.

WHOLEY'S FISH MARKET

A very unique, must-see grocery store—with singing cows, a model train traversing the aisles, and huge lobster tails.

REYNA'S MEXICAN FOODS

A Mexican grocery store which sells homemade tortillas. The taco stand in the front of the store is a can't miss.

PENNSYLVANIA MACARONI COMPANY

An Italian grocery with an excellent selection of cheeses and Italian meats, a wide variety of sauces, and fresh pasta.

STRIP DISTRICT MEATS

A very unique butcher shop selling exotic meats (from alligator to elk)—and high quality steak cuts, including prime steaks, dry-aged steaks, and authentic Japanese Wagyu beef.

PUTTSHACK MINI-GOLF

An indoor golf course which integrates technology-enabled games into four different courses.

FRANK CURTO PARK

See where Michael and Mackenzie had a picnic on their second date. This park, only reachable via an exit on Bigelow Blvd. (PA 380) heading toward downtown, has a great view of the Strip District and the Allegheny River towns. The park also features a giant french fry sculpture.

PIZZA LUPO

This pizza shop in Lawrenceville offers a great balance between American and Italian pizza—combining the best of both worlds.

PAMELA'S P & G DINER

A Pittsburgh classic for pancakes and other breakfast foods—and, according to rumor, a major reason why Barack Obama chose to hold the G20 conference in Pittsburgh. There are also locations in the Strip District, Oakland, and Shadyside.

PASTA TOO

A great Italian restaurant known for delicious meals and generous portion sizes. The restaurant is usually take-out only on Sundays, but grab some take-out and have a picnic in the nearby South Park (see below).

SOUTH PARK

The Southern brother to Allegheny County's North Park, South Park has a little bit of everything—from a wave pool to a (less than ideally-kept) zoo with buffalo to the county fairgrounds. South Park often offers free concerts at the South Park Ampitheater.

MADSEN DONUTS

This donut shop, founded in Geneva-on-the-Lake, OH, has been in business since 1938—and serves light, fluffy raised donuts made with care and quality ingredients.

FIORI'S PIZZARIA

If you want to try Pittsburgh-style pizza, Fiori's is the place. Known for its pies with greasy cheese and crispy crust, Fiori's is great for a late night bite—and is usually open until 1:00 AM.

CANTON AVENUE

Known by some measures as the steepest street in the United States, this street is worth a drive (or bike, or walk). Drive alongside a staircase as you climb the cobblestones into Beechview.
